Oracle Client for Mac OSX 262149 Apr 22, 2002 4:20 PM I have an Oracle 9i Database Server on Windows 2000, but I'd like to access it from my MAC running OSX. An interesting review of Oracle 10g for Mac OS X. Pros include much improved management over previous versions and a proven scalability. On the con side, optimal performance remains achievable solely in the hands of a highly skilled DBA. Additionally, the installer needs a lot of manual intervention and the Linux version is significantly ahead of other releases.

Which is the best ~~Open Source~~ free client for querying an Oracle database? It may additionally support other databases (MySQL, Postgres etc), since our development environment often requires switching between different databases.

I have been using the Oracle SQL Developer (because it's free) and at first hated every minute spent with it. I am still having weird problems with graphics, as it's running on Vista and there seems to be some sort of graphics driver problem (luckily, no-one can get it to run properly on Vista, so I am not alone in this), which makes its use quite cumbersome.

Nevertheless I had to learn how to cope with it and now I must admit it's a neat and very useful tool (NOT ONLY) for querying an Oracle database. I suppose you could query other DBs from it as well, for instance I have used it to query some legacy MS Access DBs, and so I believe you could query SQL Server as well.

You can do data migrations, imports/exports, see OWA output, and allegedly also DEBUG (step through, set breakpoints, etc..) PL/SQL code, but I haven't tried this. I have been fine with sqlplus command-line so far :) Do give it a try, and don't let the Vista-related graphics problems give you a wrong impression :)

If by open-source you really mean free, then Oracle SQL Developer is free. However it is not open-source. It is fully supported though, we use it where I work all the time.

What kind of 'client' do you mean? Do you mean the actual drivers, or just an application you can get SQL results from? eg, SQuirrel SQL

Well Oracle provide SQL Developer for free, which is basically an Oracle IDE - lets you browse tables, code editor for PLSQL, SQL query window etc ..

If you use a mac, You can try macsequel - a native mac client for oracle.

One answer (for any platform and database) is just use ODBC. E.g. on POSIX, unixODBC. Oracle of course supports the standard with their own drivers.

The best thing about working on a MacBook or MacBook Pro is working on it, not working on the VMWare Fusion instance. The virtual machine should be a background process, whether it is a Linux, Windows XP Pro or Vista instance. You’ll find out how to do that here. You’ll be able to run SQL*Plus from the Mac OS command-line, SQL*Developer natively in Mac OS, and Oracle Enterprise Manager in Mac browser (of your choosing). Oddly, the few distracting Java errors that SQL*Developer raises on a PC don’t get raised on the Mac OS X.

At present, Oracle databases don’t run natively on Mac OS X with an Intel processor. You can run Oracle Database 10gR1 on a G5 (PowerPC 970) processor (a detail I apparently missed in the installation notes on the Oracle Technical Network), but why do that? You can run Oracle Database 10gR2, Oracle Database 10g Express Edition, or Oracle Database 11g in a virtual machine on a MacBook, MacBook Pro, or Mac Pro.

Some people can't simply change their e-mail address because it is a 'better service' (even if it actually is). Hotmail.com/gmail.com are websites which don't offer the full experience he is looking for. Most of my comment was towards moving to gmail.com. He wants a native application/interface. I could have recommended Wine/Parallels/VMWare but I felt that it was just as off topic. Email client for mac os x 10.6.8.

Unless you require Java or User Defined Object Types (UDTs) inside your development instance, I’d recommend you install Oracle Database 10g Express Edition on a MacBook or MacBook Pro when you have 2GBs of memory or less. If you have 4GBs of memory, they all work fine. They actually do work on Vista but I’ve heard the new Vista license agreements may prohibit their use on Mac OS X in a VM. I’ve found Windows XP Pro x64 bit works best if you want to run Windows, and Red Hat 4.0 Advanced Server screams in the VM with enough memory.

Enough introduction, here are the steps. A word to the wise, read carefully!!!

1. I’d recommend VMWare Fusion for the virtual server. There were enough problems with Parallels that I simply ditched it. When you install VMWare, download the current release from the web (VMWare Fusion 2.0 is available as of 9/12/2008). After downloading, use your license during the installation. You can use the copy in the box, but I’ve never found one in the box to work (though I’ve only tried 4 of them).

2. Install your operating system in the Virtual Machine (VM). I’d recommend that you take the time to configure memory before hand because it runs a lot faster if you do. Skipping the one-click installation may save you time because I’ve found it still has some warts. You have two choices for configuring the network. One is NAT and the other is a bridged network. The bridged network is the most like separate machines but it may not work in certain commercial settings.
